Email headers are attached to every email, containing information about its origin, route, and destination. These headers are usually hidden by default, but you can easily view them by following our step-by-step guide. Just select your email client on top for detailed instructions.
If you’re wondering who sent an email, headers can help. Simply copy and paste the header information into the box on the left to start tracing.
Email headers work much like bus tickets: they reveal both the departure and destination points. By examining a header, you can uncover details such as the email’s source, the route it traveled, and information about the recipient.
However, as with bus tickets, some information can be faked. For instance, if the sender is using a proxy or VPN, you’ll see a masked IP address instead of the original.
Fortunately, this isn’t always an issue. Many users mistakenly think they’re anonymous when sending emails from temporary addresses, not realizing that their source IP is often still logged. This means your email tracing efforts will usually succeed.
Note that while a few email clients intentionally hide the sender’s IP address, the majority are configured to capture and transmit it via headers—making your job of tracing much easier.
